Dr. Twerski’s Sober Thought For The Day
We Are Never Alone - We need never feel alone. Ever since we were children, abandonment has been a source of anxiety. Some of us can recall the terror of being alone, while others manage to repress it. Psychologists state that, in the latter case, repressed feelings continue to affect our emotions and influence our behavior. They also say that the fear of death is nothing other than this terrible fear of abandonment. A theologian who experienced a severe depression wrote that in his darkest moments, when he felt so terribly alone, he was comforted by the verse of the Psalms: 'If I rise to the heavens, You are there, and if I descend into the depths, You are there too'-Psalms 139:8. 'I may indeed be in the depths of hell,' he said, 'but God was there with me, and I was not alone.' People who have recovered from a near-death experience describe the feeling of being in the presence of God. Again the words of the Psalmist give one courage: 'Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, You are with me'-Psalm 23:4. While God is always with us,it is even more comforting when we can think,'I have always been with Him, so why should He not be with me now?' We can live a life that banishes the terror of abandonment forever.
